19 October: From Assarts to Acts of Parliament - a landscape archaeologist's view of enclosure

Enclosure in the Yorkshire Dales is the focus of this talk by Dr David Johnson, landscape archaeologist and author, on Monday 19 October at 7.30pm at Ingleborough Community Centre, Ingleton.

The term 'enclosure' is often applied just to 18 or 19th century parliamentary reworking of farmed landscapes, but enclosing of land taken in from the fells, moors and woodland has been happening for many centuries.

This talk focuses on the Yorkshire Dales showing how and why enclosure was so important and widespread, from the Middle Ages onwards.

The talk will be followed by IAG's annual general meeting. Visitors and members are invited to arrive from 7pm to enjoy tea and coffee and view a display featuring some recent IAG projects.
