An exciting programme of visits and walks is lined up for IAG members over the summer months before our monthly talks resume in September.
A picnic at the deserted settlement of Thorns near Ribblehead (pictured) is scheduled for early June. IAG president Dr David Johnson, who led an excavation at Thorns in 2016 and 2017 involving members of IAG, will explain the site and the buildings before we enjoy a picnic lunch to celebrate the group's 30th anniversary year. We are hoping for a bright and sunny day, but watch this space!
On our July day out we'll travel by train along the scenic Settle - Carlisle railway for a visit to Appleby. There will be a guided tour of some of the historic buildings in this interesting and picturesque town.
In early August we put on our walking boots for a hike to the summit of Ingleborough, starting from Ingleton. Yvonne Luke, vice-chair of IAG, will explain the many fascinating archaeological sites that we'll see along the way. We'll be taking a packed lunch and waterproofs!
Our last visit of the summer is a special trip to Craven Museum in Skipton in early September. We have arranged a tour of the stores and we'll see, among other wonderful artefacts, the stunning Bronze Age gold lunula found near Grassington in 2023.
These summer outings are open to all IAG members, both ordinary and hands-on. They are not open to the general public but on some visits IAG members may be able to bring along a partner or friend. Dates and details will be sent by email to members so keep an eye on your inbox over the coming weeks.
Practical projects will also continue over the summer and IAG hands-on members will be involved in surveying ring cairns and cairn fields around Ingleborough, and a landscape archaeology survey in Langstrothdale. Read more about these projects.
