Visit to Craven Museum
Tuesday 8th September saw our last summer outing for this year - a tour of Craven Museum and Store in Skipton.
We were met by Charlotte Craig, Curator, and discovered that the museum was closed on Tuesdays, so we had the privilege of an exclusive wander around the collections on display. A particular point of interest was the rare and gorgeous gold lunula from the Bronze Age found near Grassington.
We split into two groups for the guided tour of the museum store, where Charlotte showed us a sample of the many more artefacts not usually on display. They were all carefully and safely packaged and stored in fully labelled boxes on movable shelves.
We were shown a selection of articles with interesting stories, including a receipt for hair powder from the 18th century, a heavy chain with integral distance markers used in the lead industry, some amazing ancient fossils, wonderful love letters between a local girl and her beau who moved to Victorian India and a beautiful bonnet with exquisite lace from the 19th century.
